Opinionated Ranter - The Adventures of Being Awesome...

I am but a man trying to live the dream. This is how I see the world...

TYRANNY

This is a letter to the editor I wrote the other day. The smoking Nazis are feeling their oats and want to ban smoking in apartment buildings now. How long before they come to your private house and demand you butt out there? I warned about this some time ago and it looks like I was right. Beware folks. These guys will stop at nothing.

Sir,
Some time ago, I wrote to the Star about the Ontario smoking ban implemented by Mr. Smitherman. In my letter, I compared him to Hitler. After being chastised for this comment, it seems I have been vindicated. He now wants to hold ‘discussions’ about making apartment buildings smoke free. Judging from his past performance, these ‘discussions’ will be a dog and pony show only and he will ramrod his ideas down the throats of every citizen in Ontario. He disagrees with smoking. Good for him. But he has already backtracked on allowing Casinos to have smoking shelters. He has backtracked on Legion halls having smoking shelters. As all good Liberals, he seems rather wishy-washy. He learns quickly how to play the political game. Hold discussions. Make it look like you care. Then take away the rights of the people to choose and let them seethe. The stats he uses are false, but they’re good enough for his purposes. And now to ban smoking in one’s own home? What do we have to look for next? You can’t eat broccoli because it causes gas, which in turn adds to global warming? Obesity has overtaken smoking as the number one killer, but is he doing anything about that? No. Mere platitudes that the issue should be looked into. When will he come after owners of private homes and tell them they can’t smoke inside their own domicile? He’s already tried it with cars having children in them. I will say again the man is another Hitler and the sooner he is removed from office, the better. Hopefully, when the province looks at all the broken promises of this Liberal government, come next election, they will be turfed a few time zones away. As Christina Blizzard of the Toronto Sun wrote, "Canadians fought repression, fear and intimidation in two world wars. We will not tolerate such elements in our midst now." It seems it is time for us to stand against tyranny.

People like Smitherman are crawling out from under rocks all over the US, too. There are more non-smoking apartments than smoking ones. Truck stops are starting to go non-smoking as well. It pisses me off to the limit that the whole non-smoking mess was caused by the myth that "second hand smoke kills." You'd think that the World Health Organisation and the British Medical Society contradicting the myth would have made a difference.

Sorry Don. Like Gore, the smoke Nazis don't want to hear dissenting opinions. They just want to cram their version of the straight and narrow down your throat. It's the old 'don't confuse me with facts, I know what I want' scenario.

I stopped smoking about 30 years ago and, while I am pleased to go to a restaurant without breathing smoke, I am enough of a Libertarian to object to government edicts. If enough people refuse to enter an establishment because of (to them) offensive smoke, the proprietor will soon change the rules -- all without the government intervention. Same with apartment buildings and any other establishment; the market will make the decision.

However, I really resent the comparison of the folks' objecting to smoking or any other social ill to Hitler and Nazi Germany. To do so is to trivialize the Nazi regime. I feel the same way about socio-economic problems in poor communities being termed as living in a Ghetto! There are major differences between Nazi Germany and the anti-smoking advocates and poor neighborhoods to the ghettos of Poland and Germany.

With all respect, the over-the-top language weakens your main point -- of which I generally approve.

You're right Jim, maybe the term Nazi has been trivialized. It has become rather mainstream however, perhaps to our detriment. However, I feel the comparison is justified. The Nazis were not just involved in concentration camps or the elimiination of the Jews, Gypsies and any one else who didn't didn't fit their idea of a perfect people. They wanted even border-line persons to conform to their way of thinking. Hitler and his henchmen started off slow and grew the party to the point where they felt they could take on the world. I don't believe the same thing could happen today, but I do see Smitherman as being a dictator. Our vets fought and died to give us freedom. Smitherman wants to take that away from us. I suppose I could have said Stalin or Castro, but for the sake of bringing to light the methods Smitherman uses, Hitler seemed to fit. Please see also my follow-up article to this where I give some more background.
Thanks for bringing it to my attention and I apologize to anyone whom I might have offended. I'll watch it in the future.

I don't know..just my opinion, but I think the term "nazis" is pretty apt to describe a group that wants to force everyone else to their way of thinking, and barring that, to get rid of them. We can all get along, smokers and nonsmokers, as long as we have respect for *each other* (that means it goes both ways, non-smokers)-give the smokers their areas to smoke, for crying out loud. The exorbitant taxes they pay for tobacco benefit everyone, nonsmokers included. Keep on with more and more laws affecting personal choices to smoke-even when it doesn't affect others--and the cash cow will go away, you know. I am a fairly intelligent adult; I can make my own decisions about smoking.
