TERROR SUSPECTS
I caught a news item the other day that might be of interest. It seems Issam al Yamani is, as described by the government, a retired terrorist or possibly a terrorist sleeper cell. Why is this important, you ask? Well, stick around to find out.
The gentleman in question has won yet another chance to stay in Canada after a judge ruled that Stockwell Day, the Public Safety Minister, may have ignored the man's plea that he has renounced violence. Maybe against his family. As Don Lee wrote me, "There are no atheists in a foxhole", I'm sure every prisoner in jail has found Jesus and every terrorist will renounce violence when it looks like they'll be sent back to whatever cave they crawled out of to reign terror on the rest of the world.
The government is taking a hardened look at immigration since 9/11, but our courts are trying to take a more liberal view of the whole matter. al Yamani is a Palestinian man who has lived in the Toronto area since arriving from Lebanon in 1985, and was declared inadmissible to Canada because of his past membership in an outlawed terrorist group. The significance of that statement lies in the fact that he was declared inadmissable in 1985, and today, 22 years later, he is stillhere. Do we see the hint of a Liberal government in any of this?
Justice Anne Mactavish says, "A central thrust of Mr. al Yamani's application for ministerial relief was his renunciation of violence and his commitment to finding a peaceful resolution of the Palestinian issue." Uh huh. It is interesting to note that the government of Conservative PM Brian Mulroney refused this man entrance to Canada in the first place. Subsequent Liberal governments have allowed him to stay. Mactavish said there is no evidence that Mr. Day took into account al Yamani's apparent change in views . How could she possibly know that? Beside being a judge she is also clairvoyant?
al Yamani, after learning of the decision, said, "It was clear from the government's argument in the court that ‘the deportation of Issam al Yamani will show to our friends - Israel and the United States - that we are not soft on terrorism.' " Should we be? You were refused entry 22 years ago because of your ties to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.
From a National Post article, "Mactavish did not dispute the government's allegations on why Mr. al Yamani should be deported. In fact, little of the government's evidence was in dispute. Mr. al Yamani admits he was a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine for many years and that his father was one of the PFLP's founders. It was accepted that the PFLP has engaged in terrorism, including airline hijackings, kidnappings, shootings and suicide bombings killing civilians. Since November, 2003, the PFLP has been listed as a "terrorist organization" under Canada's anti-terrorism legislation. Mr. al Yamani said he was a member of the group while living in Canada, and it was from within Canada that he accepted almost $1-million in funds he redistributed to other groups in the Palestinian territory, earmarked for humanitarian purposes. Outside of Canada, he once worked as the personal secretary to the head of the PFLP." Is all that clear enough? And now this nitwit judge is asking the minister whether or not he's considered all the evidence? The evidence seems pretty clear.
Here's the short answer, Justice Mactavish. "Yeah, I looked it all over, gave it a nanosecond of thought, and the decision stands. Send the sucker back to Lebanon."
al Yamani says he became a changed man after coming to Canada and he now rejects violence, saying,."In Canada, my struggle is within the rule of law." The Mafia, drug dealers, hookers and every law breaker ‘struggles within the rule of the law'. Until they are exposed. That is when their epiphany arrives and they cry they are misunderstood.
Send him back and be done with it.
