Opinionated Ranter - The Adventures of Being Awesome...

I am but a man trying to live the dream. This is how I see the world...

SHARIAH LAW III

Shariah law is used mainly, but not exclusively, to settle domestic or civil disputes in the Muslim world. As I've written here before, it is law which keeps women under the total control of their husbands or any other male in the Muslim community. Some people think it is fair and just, and that might be true if you are a sadist. If you have any reasoning ability, you will see that it is merely a way of treating women worse than a slave.
Countless numbers of women's groups, both Muslim and non-Muslim, opposed the introduction of Shariah law into our judicial system here in Canada. And well they should. And better that they won and we don't recognize it here.

A blogger named Bhumika commented on one of my articles on this subject and said the problem is not confined to the peoples of the mid-East. She is from Pakistan and says that even Hindus and Buddhists treat their women like dirt, not just Muslims. I filed this little tidbit away until I saw a National Geographic Special on TV the other night. It focused on Muslims and the role of Shariah law in Pakistan.
A woman there was mutilated by her husband because he thought she was seeing someone else. She was pregnant at the time, although they didn't say how far along she was. The husband was eventually sentenced to 14 years in prison. And he wouldn't have gotten that if it were not for the courageous acts of his wife.
He tied her upside down and began working on her. He cut off her ears because, "She wasn't listening to me." He blinded her because, "She was looking at things that are not allowed." He pulled out her tongue because, "She was saying things that I disagreed with." He cut off her nose because, "If I don't want her, no one else will either." All this is said in a rather matter of fact way by the husband. He and other fundamentalist Muslims believe the Quar'an instructs them to treat women this way.

A detractor of mine, a Muslim, seems to think women are revered under Shariah law. In the case of a Lebanese couple, where the husband stabbed both his wife and child, this detractor writes, "Under Shariah law the husband would be executed and the woman would be given the equivalent of an exceptionally large payment from the mans remaining assets (I think it's like over 50%, especially if he had a son, goes up to 75% of his assets), after which the remaining assets are distributed accordingly across his family." I find it hard to believe that a justice system that allows a man to rape a woman (direct quote from the husband who cut up his wife: "I was out of town so I took a woman. It is my right.") and turns a blind eye, yet will stone a woman to death for adultery, would be so fair to the fairer sex. (And for a Muslim so well versed in Shariah law, why does this detractor use the phrase, "I think........."? Doesn't he know? What else doesn't he know? Muslims are proud of the fact that men are not allowed to touch women without permission. That is why they throw acid into the woman's face to disfigure her. Hey, he never touched her, right? That is why they use sticks and clubs to beat women who don't measure up to their standards. Hey, he still hasn't touched her. As for the rapes, the woman has to convince the Shariah court that it was indeed a rape and not an extramarital affair before she is beaten, imprisoned or killed. The man gets to walk away.
My detractor seems to not know that religion trumps government in the mid-East countries. Mullahs control the mosque and the mosque controls the government. He seems to know more about Shariah law than those who are afraid of it. His misbegotten words try to explain away the fact of the women who oppose Shariah law. I suppose he is right and the rest of them are all wrong. I also suppose he is full of himself and knows not whereof he speaks.
A recent episode of ‘Little Mosque on the Prairie' had a fellow who wanted to convert to Islam. I know it's only a comedy, but it brought the issue to the forefront. This fellow was all for women wearing the head scarf, not listening to rock and roll and in general being subservient to the man. Don't blame me. The show is written, produced and directed by Muslims. They seem to be against Shariah law too
These atrocities are done in the name of honour to the man and/or his family. Some honour. The PM of Pakistan is on record as saying that he is trying to change this mind set, but he only has so many people to devote to the problem. As for money to educate people and make them see that woman do indeed have rights, he is fine with putting that money towards developing nuclear weapons. Without them, he claims, he will have no country. I say without the women being treated equally, you will have no country. The man is a bold faced liar and he likes things just the way they are.
I know my detractor wants me to name him in order to boost his own readership. Those who have read my past blogs know who he is. I will not give him the satisfaction here.

I hope your detractor reads every word of this blog! He needs an education in his own religion.

Back in the 70's women were badly treated even in the US. I know one woman who was repeatedly beaten by her husband (once because it rained! No kidding!) and the police did nothing. She left him several times but was forced back to him by her parents, cops and a judge. She was finally able to divorce him. It's a disgrace that such things still happen, and a bigger disgrace that some religions and governments tolerate it.
