SCAMNESTY
I can't take credit for the title. I stole it from SL Bradish who coined it in one of her articles, but I thought it fits the bill to a tee. I also don't know much about this proposed amnesty bill that has been in the paper of late. However, that won't keep me from sharing what little I do know.
It seems to me that the whole ruckus started when the illegal Mexicans marched in California, demanding rights normally given only to American citizens. I couldn't believe what I was reading. Talk about having nerve. These people are criminals and they want to be treated like Americans? Well, I suppose it is better than what they'd get back home, but that's beside the point.
I'm not sure whether it was Bush or Schwarztenegger who proposed giving them driver's licences, health insurance, welfare and all the rest, but the culminating point comes when Bush proposes the ‘Guest Worker Amnesty Bill'. I always thought a guest was someone you invited in. These people, much to Vincent Fox's chagrin, were not invited. Of course that didn't stop him from ripping into Bush for not making it easier for these people to show up on US soil. Fox reminds me of the 15 year old father who finds he can't take care of his family and has to turn to daddy to help him out.
Now Bush, basically a lame duck prez, knows these people represent a huge voting block and he is looking out for the future of the Republican party. By granting amnesty, perhaps these folks can become Americans in time for the election and thank him by voting Republican. It seems the Democrats will steamroller the ballot box this time around and Bush is trying to keep the damage to a minimum. But this thinking is wrong.
The Democrats have to come to grips with the fact that these people are in their country illegally and thus are criminals. They should be deported and that voting bloc will be taken out of play. Thomas Sowell said it well. A guest is someone you invite. A gate-crasher is someone who shows up uninvited and you toss him out. A criminal is someone who shows up uninvited and demands your money. And isn't that what these folks are doing? Demanding money? Contrary to popular belief, social programs don't grow on trees, waiting for you to pick them when they are ripe. Yet the Dems seem to think this is the way of the world. Give the masses what they want or what they need and we'll worry about funding later on.
No conservative government is ever popular simply because of the fact they have to spend so much time cleaning up after a liberal government. They come in and cut funding to a number of programs and the hue and cry goes across the land that civilization as we know it will end forthwith. But after people realize that they didn't really need all those programs to begin with, we all settle back into our routines and see the right thing was done. Reagan was not popular in office, but he made a good point when he asked the people to consider if they were better off today than they were 4 years ago. We've had a majority of liberal governments here with the odd conservative one to act as clean-up crew. And after all the belly-aching is over, if people were honest with themselves, they'd have to agree that we are better off under the cons than the libs.
One doesn't even have to go as far as federal politics to see how liberal cradle to grave care affects society. Just look at your local school. Instead of raising the bar for excellence higher, thanks to all the new technology available to us, we are trying to dumb down our systems so no one gets offended. You see it in the schools, in the churches, in the courts, at work. We have become so politically correct that we daren't say or do anything that might offend our neighbour. And that's how dumb ideas like this amnesty come up.
Thank God it has been quashed. Let's hope it doesn't raise it's ugly head again.

I can't help but think that a lot of aliens who come to the U.S. are coming because they think we are a ..well, in the interest of discretion I'll clean it up:

Maybe if they did, they'd feel differently! I'd love to take both those morons and chain them to a lightpole in Southeast San Diego 2 miles from the border and see how they like it!
Well done! I agree wholeheartedly!
