Opinionated Ranter - The Adventures of Being Awesome...

I am but a man trying to live the dream. This is how I see the world...

RUNNIN' BACK TO SASKATOON

This title comes from a Guess Who hit from some years ago. Nothing ever happens in Saskatchewan which has Saskatoon as its provincial capital. It's a nice little chunk of land we keep around to fill in some space between Manitoba and Alberta, filled with wheat fields and some big honkin' combines to bring in the crops. They don't even change their clocks when DST kicks in. How's that for being laid back? But they've been in the news recently.

Just the other day, for the second time in four months, a woman gave birth and abandoned the child. The first woman to do this, wrapped the little nipper in a blanket and towel and left him on a doorstep in -30*C weather. Thankfully, he was found in time and rescued. This time, the mother decided to give birth during a shopping expedition at the local Wal-Mart.

She gave birth within 14 minutes of entering a washroom at the store and, gee, she walked out empty handed. She had left the child face down in a toilet.

Store management found the little one and rescued it and the woman has since come forward to take credit for her deed. Now the big question is, what to do with her? Some say she needs counseling, others say she needs jail. The Crown has not decided yet whether to press charges or not. Let me make it easy for them. Whack her with the full brunt of the law. This is not a mere case of child abandonment. This is attempted murder.

Dr. Donna Stewart, speaking on the subject, says there is nothing for society to gain by throwing the book at this miscreant. She's right. However, the mother must be made to pay for her outrageous behaviour and start to learn a little right from wrong. Stewart says that many of these types of mothers come from broken homes or dysfunctional families. They get no support from outside agencies and at times the mother's father may be the father of her child. Again, she's probably right. Let's take a moment here to weep for the true victim, Mommy. Good luck. She won't see any tears rolling down my cheeks.

How much of a safety net do we have to give these people? Unless they've been living in a cave since, like forever, they must know there are organizations out there that can help them. Ashamed to go home and tell Mom and Dad you're knocked up? Maybe you should have thought of that before you jumped in the sack with Lance the quarterback. By the way, this woman was 24 years old, so save me the trouble of saying every young girl can make a mistake. She ain't 12 or 13 folks.

There are ‘safe' houses where she deposit the child if she doesn't want it. And she doesn't even have to do it. The child can be left by a family member, neighbour, relative or the mom herself. No questions asked. Give her points for not aborting the child. Take them away for her trying to murder it.

This liberalized thinking of providing that cradle to grave support for any and all ills is what's wrong with this country. People grow up with absolutely no sense of responsibility and expect everyone around them to bail them out of a jam. Unless this woman is a Cretan personified, she had to know what her options were.
I wouldn't advocate having her sterilized, although the thought did cross my mind. She can get counseling in prison while she's learning a lesson. There should be no excuse for her to do hard time. Her baby would have done a lot harder.

The woman in question deserves the same prison time any other attempted murderer would have recieved. Such a callous disregard for her child (or anyone else) should merit the weight of the law coming down on her head. I wouldn't draw the line at sterilization, either. If she tried to kill one child, why give her the opportunity to kill the next one?

Maybe one benefit of the doubt, S L. After that, yes, sterilization would be in order. But then she'd be free to boink her brains out without any repercussions. Why not have her monitored and take the child from her when it is born and make her pay for its upbringing? She might just wake up a bit.

Excellent alternative! She would never be able to try to kill another child, but still have to take responsibility for her own actions!

Thank you. Some times the grey cells do kick in, lol.

Ranter,

I say do all three, give her counselling, lock her ass up for atttempted murder, THEN have her mandatorily sterilized!

Gotta cover all your bases yanno...

We get cases like this all the time down here and there's no damned excuse for them...Stupidity should be painful..there are so many free resources available to women these days in that situation, that ignorance isn't going to cut it anymore as an excuse...

Young, underage girls can even get free birth control from Planned Parenthood now without the consent of their parents...so if someone is going to be thoughtlessly permiscuous, that's the place to go...

I'm with both of you guys...there's NO excuse...

Great post as always buddy,

Nick

Thank you Nick. There are some places where they'll ask about the mothers background for purely medical reasons. But the mother doesn't have to give up any info. If she walks in, drops off the kid and says 'I'm outta here', that's it. But making stupidity against the law? I wish we could, but the jails would full of all the a-hole drivers I encounter daily, lol. She's got every bit as much right to be an idiot as you do to be smart. She shouldn't have the right to endanger a child though. No, give her one more chance with having a kid, like I said, and make her pay the full nut for bringing it up. If she screws it up again, have her spayed.

Just playing devil's advocate here: were there any clinics where she could have had an abortion in her area?
8. May 31st 2007 @ 20:58. youranter Says:
Hi, D. Yes. there are clinics everywhere where she could have gone. And it wouldn't have cost hr a penny. That's what makes this so outrageous. I won't go into the abortion debate, but to choose the route she did is nothing less than attempted murder. What is more outrageous is the Crown having to decide whether or not to press charges. Thank God the child is safe and out of this nut's hands. Cheers to the staff at Wal-Mart who found the little one in time.

Then let the punishment fit the crime. Before she goes
to jail, she needs to go face first into a Wal-mart toilet.

For a lonnnnnng time.
