PARADISE REGAINED - I THINK
Well, it seems our computer troubles are over. For now anyway. I had taken ours into my local ISP to have their techies look at it and solve the problem. No such luck. They said it was beyond the service they provide and said I'd have to get a geek to look at it for help. I'm not using the term geek maliciously here. These are the guys who have forgotten more about computers than I'll ever know and they have my respect. Especially after this incident. I know the geeks make good money selling their knowledge and didn't really want to go that route. I also know there's a girl in the building with a Windows '98 recovery disk that I can borrow. Someone had told me that after a while, a program just gets tired and no matter what you do, you're going to run into problems with it. So that's option one. Borrow the disk, crash the computer, spend another two days bringing it all back up to snuff (installing programs which I had previously that made my life easier) and praying it would not do the same thing again 12 hours after I get it running.
Option two was to buy a new computer. The wife and I put our heads together and decided we go for door number two. We headed down the street to a computer shop and talked with the sales clerk there. He went through a model that sounded ideal for what we wanted and he almost had me sold. Then he dropped the bomb. It was a Dell. He told me of the problems Dell has had in the past with repairs and said they'd cut a deal where all repairs were done on premises. Sorry, I know some people who have Dells and the word I get from them is run, don't walk away from a Dell. We said we'd think it over and headed up to Staples Office Supply.
I know we could probably have saved money by going to Wal-Mart, but I was thinking, if something goes wrong, who ya gonna call? So we get to Staples and a clerk takes us through all the various makes and models. We settle for an H-P with a 17" Acer monitor. We're running Microsoft Vista and I'm still not sure about this. We had signed up for the extended warranty ($64 for 2 extra years didn't seem like a big deal to me) and told him to put it in the car. He asked if I wanted to buy the set up program. What the hell is that I wondered? It seems for $50 they'll send a guy out to your house to set up all the various programs you want or need after you basically plug the thing in. Thinking very highly of myself and my skills, I thank him but say no, I'll be able to figure it out.
I should've paid the money. Boy, have computers ever changed. I know everything I had before is in here, but I am still trying to find a lot of it. What bugged me most, I suppose, is that this one will not accept floppy disks. Everything we've ever written has been stored on floppies and now, they're useless to us.
It also has some programs that seem to have minds of their own and interrupt whatever you're doing now and then. I've found a couple and deleted them, but it will take time to find them all. The monitor is HUGE. I swear, if I sit in front of this thing long enough, I'll start to tan. So far we're pretty happy with the whole package.
I do plan on getting that recovery disk, hooking up the old computer to this one, downloading all the disks and burning them onto CD's though. That may have to wait a day or two. Right now I'm having too much fun finding and trying out all the bells and whistles this thing has.
