MORE ON SPRUCEDALE
Apparently I don't know what I'm talking about. I've done a few articles on the kiddie jail called Sprucedale Detention Centre and was raked for not knowing it contains youngsters who simply made minor mistakes and now have to do time behind bars. How silly of me.
The whole thing started when I read an article about one mother's fight to have a 21 year old inmate transferred from this facility to one where he would actually have to do hard time for his crime.
Never mind that Sprucedale inmates have their own rooms, shared kitchen, lounge, TV and PSP game systems. Never mind that Sprucedale inmates have indoor pool, a gym, a weight room, tennis courts, shared kitchens, video games and late-night weekends when they're allowed to order in Kentucky Fried Chicken or McDonald's. Never mind if Sprucedale inmates get bored, there's always the volleyball club, hockey program, arts and crafts and music appreciation. And I had the nerve to call it a summer camp experience for these losers. No, I obviously don't know what I'm talking about.
That's why I'm not writing about an inmate who killed his girlfriend with a baseball bat. That's why I'm not going to tell you about his sexual relationship with a female jail guard. That's why, in a letter he didn't write, he never said, "You have become the purpose to my day and a reason to better myself. You've awoken ... this most powerful of all emotions, love. Love scares me because it is so powerful it can control reason and make decisions against reason and logic. My heart is telling me that we are supposed to be one."
That's why Crown Attorney Tony Loparco didn't say he was pleased the killer will spend the remaining months of this year in custody. That's why he didn't say, "We had grave concerns that he'd be let out at this point. He hasn't had enough counselling and continues to have obsessions about at least one individual." That's why I can't tell you the killer declined to take alcohol or drug abuse programs or anger management courses.
I surely can't write that this murderer considers himself the victim in all this. And surely, I can't tell you that the convict, who wasn't penalized for the affair even though it violates the facility's rules, continued to enjoy his own room, a shared kitchen, lounge and TV and PSP game system.
Because I don't know what I'm talking about.
