MAKING SCENTS
The other day S L Bradish wrote an article about a fellow who was banned from his local pub because of the foul odour he emitted. No one seemed to notice when they were allowed to smoke in the bar, but after banning smoking, it became apparent the man ate too many beans and was spreading the joy of his scent with his drinking buddies. I thought it was a funny story and commented about a woman who is being threatened with being tossed off a bus for wearing too much perfume. I thought this was happening in Toronto, but in fact, it's taking place in Calgary.
The woman, Natalie Kuhn, wears ‘Very Irrésistible' by Givenchy and swears she only uses two squirts of the stuff before heading out for the day. The perfume is billed as bringing out a woman's "spontaneity, audacity and sensuality." I've never smelled it but I assume it is not what one would consider a discreet scent. Just the name makes me wonder why she is riding a bus instead of driving a Benz.
Regardless, she is most offended at the fact the bus driver told her to sit in the rear of the bus or find alternate transportation. And the thing is, it's not only her regular driver who objects to the odour. A relief driver pulled the bus over to open the windows because it bothered him also. He said, "In case anyone's wondering why I'm opening all the windows it's because someone on here is wearing strong perfume and I have an allergy." I can sympathize. I have an allergy to cosmetics and anyone wearing too much perfume or cologne can make my stomach turn.
I had one issue at work with a woman who no one else could smell but it was strong enough to me to send me to the can to vomit. She swore she wasn't wearing any perfume and maybe she wasn't. Perhaps it was the fabric softener she used on her clothes. I felt bad for her, but on the other hand, I had a job to do. They moved her to a different location.
Some people think they don't overdo the perfume/cologne thing and others seem to bathe in it. Either way, it is hard on people with allergies. While Calgary transit has no policy about how people smell, I think people should be aware of their surroundings and think a little bit about others. Non-smokers hail smoking bans by saying how happy they are not coming home ‘reeking' of cigarettes. Fine. But why should I go home reeking of your perfume? Worse, reeking of your farts? Explain that one to your better half.
Ms Kuhn seems like she wants to take this issue to the Supreme Court. I say try one squirt first and see if it bothers anyone. If so, lay off the stuff, save the money and buy a car and then you can wear as much as your little heart desires.
