Opinionated Ranter - The Adventures of Being Awesome...

I am but a man trying to live the dream. This is how I see the world...

KYOTO IX (cont'd)

Dr. Christopher Landsea is a respected scientist, one of the best in his field. He is with the Atlantic Oceanographic & Meteorological Laboratory, and was a contributing author for the UN's second International Panel on Climate Change in 1995. The IPCC called on him as a contributing author for its "Third Assessment Report" in 2001, and again invited him to participate when they called him to be an author in the "Fourth Assessment Report." This report would specifically focus on Atlantic hurricanes, his specialty, and be published by the IPCC in 2007. So why is he a Denier?

The IPCC's Kevin Trenberth, the very person who had invited him, was participating in a press conference. The title of the press conference was perplexing: "Experts to warn global warming likely to continue spurring more outbreaks of intense hurricane activity."
Dr. Landsea had not done any work that substantiated this claim. Apparently nobody had. Even more perplexing was the fact that none of the participants in that press conference were known for their hurricane expertise. To Dr. Landsea's knowledge, none had performed any research at all on hurricane variability, the subject of the press conference. He knew that all previous and current research in the area of hurricane variability showed no reliable upward trend in the frequency or intensity of hurricanes. Not in the Atlantic basin nor in any other basin. To add to the utter incomprehensibility of the press conference, the IPCC itself, in both 1995 and 2001, had found no global warming signal in the hurricane record.
To stop the press conference, or at least stop any misunderstandings that might come out of it, Dr. Landsea contacted Dr. Trenberth prior to the media event. He prepared a synopsis for him that brought him up to date on the state of knowledge about hurricane formation. To his amazement, Dr. Trenberth simply dismissed the concerns and the press conference proceeded.

Hurricanes had been all over the news that summer. Global warming was the obvious culprit and only a fool or an oil-industry lobbyist, the press made clear, could ignore the link between what seemed to be ever increasing hurricane activity and ever increasing global warming. Global warming was causing hurricanes.
Dr. Landsea wrote top IPCC officials, imploring: "Where is the science, the refereed publications, that substantiate these pronouncements? What studies are being alluded to that have shown a connection between observed warming trends on the earth and long-term trends in tropical cyclone activity? As far as I know, there are none." But no one in the IPCC leadership showed the slightest concern for the science. Dr. Suzuki is a scientist and chooses to ignore science in this matter. It is more than troubling that, in a recent article, he wrote, "It means our environment, not our economy must be the real bottom line." I guess he's being paid more than very well to jump on Al Gore's bandwagon. As for Gore, he is no scientist. He can ignore all he wants as long as his name is in the paper and he receives an Oscar for his propaganda film.
Dr. Landsea then asked the IPCC leadership for assurances that his work for the IPCC's 2007 report would be true to science: "[Dr. Trenberth] seems to have already come to the conclusion that global warming has altered hurricane activity and has publicly stated so. This does not reflect the consensus within the hurricane research community. ... Thus I would like assurance that what will be included in the IPCC report will reflect the best available information and the consensus within the scientific community most expert on the specific topic." The assurance didn't come, but what did come was the realization that the IPCC was corrupting science.
Dr. Landsea will not be writing its section on hurricanes in the IPCC's "Fourth Assessment Report." That task will be left to the successor that Dr. Trenberth chose. As part of his responsibility, he will need to explain why, despite all expectations, the 2006 hurricane year was so unexpectedly light, and at the historical average for the past 150 years.
Gore and Suzuki live on. By telling lies.

Dr. Landsea has more than a degree over on Gore. He has integrity. Something Suzuki also lacks. And Trenberth. That explains why they're getting famous on a lie and why they'll be laughing stocks when the dire predictions don't come true. They earned it.

It gets scarier, Don. Stay tuned.

I really don't understand how anyone with an ounce of brains or scientific background could jump on board with Gore. Trenberth, Suzuki, etc. will be shamed out of business when none of their predictions happen. I guess the fleeting fame means more to them than their positions in the scientific community. They will go the way of the "global cooling expects" from the 70's.

It baffles me too, S L. I suppose it's a result of our liberal, PC leaning ways that these idiots are even allowed to speak. Too bad you can't lock someone up for stupidity or out and out lying.
