Opinionated Ranter - The Adventures of Being Awesome...

I am but a man trying to live the dream. This is how I see the world...

KID NATION

Anyone who reads my articles must, by this time, know that I am not a fan of 'reality shows'. I think they're beyond stupid, and as much as it seems the majority of the population agrees with me, Hollywood keeps coming out with this crap.

I'll watch Hell's Kitchen, but that's it. Gordon Ramsey does a fine job at swearing at his aspiring chefs, pushing them each week to their breaking points, and I think with good reason. It is his name he is putting on the line after someone finally wins, and if he loses his good reputation, what does he have left?

There is a new show coming to TV this fall called 'Kid Nation' which seems to be garnering debate. You can bet I'll be watching this one.

The premise is to take a number of children and dump them in a desert somewhere to see how they would build a society. Don't laugh, they can't do any worse than we have. But on one hand you have the detractors saying you're exploiting kids and there is no adult supervision. Well, the whole point is to show how well the kids do without adult interference. As for exploiting the kids, tell me you wouldn't leap at the chance to escape the clutches of your parents for a few weeks in the summertime. Some say the kids will be put in danger and who will help them then? Duh. Who do you think is manning the cameras. These kids will be surrounded by adults, who will save them from performing human sacrifices if it comes down to that.

I may be disappointed, but I am imagining a Lord of the Flies type show where one group of kids resorts to the law of the jungle while the other group stays relatively civil. This is why I want to watch it.

The kids won't be allowed to get into any real danger and the commercials I've seen so far have intrigued me. I'm looking forward to this one. You can keep your Bachelorette and Big Brother. This one looks like it might be a winner. Too bad it will only be good for one season.

Ranter,

sounds like exploitation to me, but then again, people will always watch those crappy reality shows, which, by the way, are mostly staged...

I agree with you...it is exploitation of children...and in any forum, that's just plain wrong...

Great post buddy...

Take care,

Nick

I've seen the ads, too. The "exploitation" if it exists is with the cooperation of both the kids and their parents. I'm pretty sure the children weren't kidnapped and forced to be on TV. There will undoubtedly be a large staff to make sure nothing bad happens to any of the little "stars". I may even break down and watch it, although the other reality shows bore me to tears.

I have to go with SL here, Nick. Perhaps exploitation was the wrong word to use. These kids had to audition for the parts and there will be adults around to make sure they don't don't try to kill each other off. It just looked like an interesting premise to me and I'd like to see it. The other 'reality' shows are nothing but soft porn nowadays. I've gor better thing s to watch than them.
Thanks for the comments, both of you.

Hi ranter. I hate, hate, hate reality TV. Fortunately, it seems to be dying a slow death as a modicum of creative content has found its way back to the lineup. (Although, I tend to stick with Discovery, History Channel, Comedy Central, etc., rather than the networks).

Still, this idea is intriguing. As Nick mentioned, it will probably be largely staged as we've learned that "reality" TV tends to be less real than one would imagine. Still, 'Lord of the Flies' is one of my favorite books. It would be fascinating to see what really happened in that sort of situation, although I suppose some adults will be obligated to break it up once the war paint and spears come out....

Hi Winston. I hate 'reality' TV with a passion. Like you, I'd rather watch Discovery or some of the other intelligent cable shows, but I'd have to pay a bunch of money for channels I'd never watch. So, I'm stuck with PBS. They do some pretty good stuff and sure beat the snot out of shows like The New Adventures of Old Christine.

Ha!! You're making the rather large assumption that those kids will have a clue. Are they also going to set up air-conditioned tents for them, complete with mini-fridge and X-Box on the flat-screen?

Tell me, how are those kids going to last a day when schools stopped teaching survival skills, first aid, navigation, and outdoorsmanship in favor of golfing, speedtexting, powersnacking and Wii techniques years ago?

It'll be just as fake and set-up as I hear "Survivor" was.
Exploitation? Come on, Nick!

I watched the first Survivor show and it wasn't too bad actually. By the second season, it was junk. That's why I say this one will be good for one season only. No kid should be exploited, but these kids won't be. I'm sure their stage Moms will be right there beside them every step of the way to make sure things stay on the up and up. And collect a fat lawsuit settlement if their not.

D.Armenta,

I meant "exploitation" as in someone will pay these kids vast sums of money just to run around in fake camo gear and act like Lord Of The Flies on crack...

LOL

Just like it's exploitation to use half naked women to sell just about anything!

No, they might not think it's exploitation when they get the big fat paycheck, but I don't think anyone should have to prostitute themselves for anyone's entertainment...Especially not kids...And their parents? They're no better...

Take care,

Nick

True enough Nick. But you know as well as I do that some parents will live their fantasies through their kids. Jon Bonet Ramsey springs to mind. There are indeed a variety of ways to be exploited, some less obvious than others. As for prostitution, that's a whole other kettle of fish. A hooker gets paid for her 'services'. Don't we all get paid for our services? Does that make us all hookers? Oh geez, you got me going now..............
