Opinionated Ranter - The Adventures of Being Awesome...

I am but a man trying to live the dream. This is how I see the world...

JUST WONDERING

D. Armenta recently did a great blog asking people to write in and tell a bit about themselves. It was a ‘getting to know each other' piece that I thought was great. A lot of replies and we all learned a bit more about each other. Since then, it has kept me up at night, thinking of how to expand on the theme. Well, lightning finally struck.

Now, unless your name is Paris and you were born with a silver shovel up your ....... never mind. The thing is, the average Joe or Josephine has to do something for a living to pass the time between birth and death. Something other than watching TV or playing on your Gameboy that is. Society demands that we find gainful employment (a silly concept) and look after ourselves in the interim years.

So I'm going to ask: What is your job and when, if ever, did you find your calling? You may be a teenager using McDonalds as a stepping stone to bigger and better things, or it may have become your career. You may be a doctor or a vet. When did it strike you to get into medicine? When did you realize you wanted to become a proctologist? That scares me. You may be an author, a welder, a designer of video games, a hairdresser, a fireman or a cowboy.

Let me know. I think it might be interesting.

O.K., I'll bite. When I learned to read and write (at the age of four) and taught myself to type (at 5) I knew all I really wanted to do was write. Newspaper and magazine articles, novels, poetry, anything and everything. After plenty of stumbling blocks over the years, I finally got off my can and started in earnest. Guess I'm a "late bloomer" but so was Grandma Moses!

Why Ranter, I am honored..thank you.

I have done many things for a living because I like to learn hands-on. Some of them: scuba diving instructor, air traffic controller, bartender, singer. aviation firefighter, active duty Navy air traffic controller,FM radio announcer, YMCA camp counselor, horseback riding instructor (english and western),medical missionary, postman. There are more but you get the idea.

Right now I'm a drummer/lyricist in a working trio, and I'll probably be one for the rest of my days because it's a constant mental challenge and just downright fun to do. Like S.L., I'm a late bloomer as a drummer; didn't learn until I was 40.

Still learning--all the time, which is a great thing about middle age! It gets easier.

Great post, Ranter. I hope you get a lot of responses.

Ranter,

besides bein a failed comedian? LOL...I'm an equine vet, as ya probably already know...and about as Irish as a leprechaun...

My parents owned an Irish horse farm, so growing up around them was pretty much all I did...I turned my love and admiration for them into a life long career...

Once wanted to be a writer...so I have like 5 books I've written stuck in an old trunk and never had the huevos to send any of them in...

Have a private pilot's license, and my own Cessna 180, but rarely get the time to fly anymore cause I'm always workin...

Was a certified PADI diver, and travelled all over looking for new places to dive...but haven't gone scuba diving in like forever...breaks of doin what I do for a living...I'm always on call 24/7...lol...

I most definetly have an Irish temper, but with age comes wisdom lol so I try never to let it get control anymore...I am also very fluent in the old Oirish, or what you'd call Gaelic language...

Was in a band in highschool and all through college...and NO! I will NOT sing Oh Canada! for you lol...I don't care who ya are lol

But when I did sing, it was usually tenor...We sang as a family every Sunday, on major holidays and of course...in Gaelic on St. Paddy's Day!...

I'm likely however to break into Danny Boy or The Irish Solider Boy at the drop of a hat, so I'd advise ear plugs at all times...*Snicker*

I play the piano, violin and guitar, although I'm not very good with the guitar yet...still learning...but I've played the piano since I was 5 and the violin since I was 7, so I'm ok with those instruments...

But there's one thing I do really really well, that not a whole lot of people know about...and that's Irish step dancing....but again no...I am NOT Michael Flatley either! So if ya expect Riverdance, you're outta luck my friend....lol...

I am pretty experienced with Irish dance moves, (traditional), and I do "step about" to a good Irish tune...Seanos is what it's actually called...I can do ceili, set dancing, jigs, reels and step dancing...

Traditional Irish step dancing is almost like second nature to me though...and, I don't think I do too awfully bad at it...Started step dancing when I was 4, and haven't stopped since...

My siblings and I won The Feis, or Irish dance competitions a number of times back home...Ah but that was when I was a wee bit younger and me stumps was a tad more limber...LOL

I am a voracious reader, a major food whore and will do or say just about anything for a good laugh...My friends are more important to me than anything, and come in second only to my job...

And oh yeah, I've been a practicing Buddhist for 9 years now, so I chant and meditate daily...

That about says ME in a nutshell...

Great post my canuck friend!...Hope ya have with it!

Take care,

Nick

Wow....after D. and Nick's answers, I'm going to have to make something up that sounds more impressive.....

Um, I'm a neurosurgeon/navy test-pilot who hunts wild boars armed only with a pen knife while composing operas to be performed at Carnegie Hall? Still doesn't seem like enough......

SL knowing at 5 what you wanted to be is fantastic. Sounds like my sister. She wanted to be a teacher at about age 5 or 6. I don't think, with all your varied experience you were too much of a late bloomer, but even so, better late than never.

Hey D. I can recognize a good idea when I see one. I believe in giving credit where credit is due too. And this post wouldn't have come about without you. You sound a bit like me. I never really had a 'calling'. I've done various jobs until I learned them really well and got bored with them. Then I moved on. Just a hippy, gypsy, goin' mobile, lol.
7. July 13th 2007 @ 11:19. youranter Says:
Nick, that's hell of a resume. I don't think I knew anyone who spoke Gaelic until now. I know about the equine vet deal. When you first said you were a vet, I took it to mean a retired soldier. I made a comment on one of your blogs reflecting this viewpoint and I'm sure it didn't make any sense to you. My bad. Sounds like you have a very full life, if you can ever get around to enjoying it all, lol.
8. July 13th 2007 @ 11:22. youranter Says:
Winston, do you perform the surgery while flying or while killing the boars? Lol, thanks for a good laugh. But seriously, let me know when they are going to do one of your operas. It'll take me time to figure out how to get to Carnegie Hall.

It's easy to get to Carnegie Hall, Youranter! Practice, practice, practice!!

I couldn't see that one coming, lmao. I knew someone who would make that comment.
