Opinionated Ranter - The Adventures of Being Awesome...

I am but a man trying to live the dream. This is how I see the world...

JOURNALISM

I have been accused in the past of being a poor journalist. Not because I don't make money at it, but because some dim bulbs insist I am one and do the job poorly. I never claimed to be one, but these fools show up every once in a while to take a strip out of me when they can't debate with a true journalist. Now that we have that out of the way, let's take a look at one who happens to be one of the few original thinkers in Canadian journalism, George Jonas.

Way back when, I started to get interested in politics and started reading Jonas' work. I might agree with him on about what he says 50% of the time, but I sure can't take away his ability to look at things in a different and new light. His worst habit is that he seems to tie everything into the Holocaust and proceeds to tell the reader how he and his family suffered and finally escaped the Nazis. Once you get past those two paragraphs, you're in for an enlightening read.

He has recently written his 14th book, called Reflections on Islam, in which he decries the notion that we are at war with terrorism. And when you think about it, he is right. "We're not at war with ‘terrorism.' Terrorism is a weapon, not an opponent. We've been at war with militant, fundamentalist Islam that uses terrorism as a weapon," he says. This is where we all smack our heads and say, "Why didn't I think of that?"

The world has approximately 1.2 billion Muslims and contrary to what some readers of this blog believe, not everyone thinks they are all terrorists, and not every Muslim takes things too personally. President Bush, rallying the troops and the general population after 9/11, said that we were at war against terrorism, not Islam. Jonas looks at it and says, "It's essential to remember that 99.9% of Muslims and Arabs aren't terrorists. But a parallel truth is that 100% of the terrorists who currently threaten us are Muslims and/or Arabs." Maybe this is why some thin skins do take it so personally, in the fact that it is their religion, and their's alone, that is giving us the suicide-murderers while other enemies pretty much play by the rules of established warfare.

Jonas goes on to say, "President Bush spoke of the need to ‘smoke terrorists out of their caves.' The trouble is, the terrorists' caves aren't all in Afghanistan. Some are in New Jersey and Florida. Others, no doubt, are in Ontario or Quebec. Much as we dislike ethnic or religious profiling for self-evident reasons, we can't disregard the fact that the current crop of terrorists recruit their members from specific religious and ethnic groups, and use their communities for camouflage. If only 0.1% of all Muslims who reside in North America are willing to participate in militant acts against the West, or support in some material way the ones who do, it means that Osama bin Laden has thousands of troops at his disposal right in our midst."

Remember, it only took 19 to carry out 9/11. And the liberal left wing nuts want to cut and run from Afghanistan and Iraq. Nancy Pelosi has made headlines by holding talks with leaders of the mid-East. I'm not sure when the Speaker of the House became authorized to make and carry out US foreign policy, but maybe someone should make her read Jonas' book.

And for those who constantly try to point out the difference between a journalist and a columnist to me, I never labelled Jonas a journalist, although he only writes a twice a week column. People who actually get paid to know these things put that handle on him.

You've been accused of poor journalistic integrity, not being a journalist. If you had a brain you'd know better than to be an idiot and simply repeat news you read on another conservative website, blindly so. Bloggers are meant to look outside the box, oh wait, you're a conservative, you've been born and bred in the box. Yeah, guess it is kind of hard to change your perspective on the world when you've grown up with such a narrow set of views.

You know, I didn't like the idea of the whole Ethics 2.0 for bloggers, but knowing you and your desire to legislate ethics and whatnot (anyone here can look at your older posts) I think it will be just the fit for you.

The only war going on here is set to make oil companies more profitable, thats about it, and it is working spectacularly. Your so called fundamentalist Islamic enemy doesn't exist, and even if it does, did less to take away your rights than your precious conservative leaders. All in the name of security, of course.

"The world has approximately 1.2 billion Muslims and contrary to what some readers of this blog believe, not everyone thinks they are all terrorists, and not every Muslim takes things too personally."

Well you should start saying that instead of labeling all of them with what one person does, and saying they are stuck several hundred years ago

The only thing you folks are at war with is yourselves, going to war is just a nice smokescreen to take away your rights in the name of security and make specific corporations which happened to be amongst the biggest funders of GWB's campaign into office more profitable. At that it is working spectacularly and look what we have here, people still think they are at danger of thousands of Muslims living in America.

Ahmed, the only idiot around here is you. We conservatives are forever thinking out of the liberal box that you live in. Or is that a litter box? Our philosophy comes from rational consideration, not the "touchy, feely" crap that liberals spew everywhere. Quoting another blogger or another writer is totally acceptable, as long as you name your source and explain why you agree. All liberals can manage to do is recite foolishness that ultimately means nothing. Go back to your mosk and try to find something better to do. (Fighting against the Muslims that are killing people leaps to mind.) At least speaking out against cold blooded murder would be worthwhile. There's an old saying about evil being able to grow only when good people do nothing. Maybe you should give it some thought. Or do you approve of suicide/homicide bombers? I'm not anti-Muslim, but the whole lot of you are beginning to get on my nerves by not speaking up for right instead of defending wrong.

Although your blog was very well wriiten, I doubt that you have any of your "personal" opinions or priorities clearly defined or worked out inside your own head..I'm an American and damned proud of it...and I have no problem whatsoever with the Muslim population here in my country...I don't view every Muslim as a potential terrorist either...because not every Muslim IS a potential terrorist..only the radical extremists ones are...So I suggest you look a bit closer at the killing that is being committed with impunity in your own countries and leave the rest of the world to itself...that's just my opinion...take it for what it's worth..

Take care,

Nick

I for one think you have passion, integrity and an all around wonderful head for journalistic prowess. I admire your fire and read you often (even if I don't always comment).

Take care!!

Ahmed, "You've been accused of poor journalistic integrity, not being a journalist." Guess what? That sentence wasn't referring to you. I can piss other people off, you know, not just you. "If you had a brain you'd know better than to be an idiot and simply repeat news you read on another conservative website, blindly so." I'm not really sure what you mean by this. Perhaps you're the idiot who thought I read something on someone else's site. Guess what? That's not where the info came from. "Your so called fundamentalist Islamic enemy doesn't exist, and even if it does, did less to take away your rights than your precious conservative leaders." I never said I have lost any rights. And I won't because rhere are some very brave men and women out there fighting to make sure I don't. As for the the 'fundamentalist Islamic enemy', I'm sure in your tiny world suicide-murderers don't exist. They do for the rest of the world though. ""The world has approximately 1.2 billion Muslims and contrary to what some readers of this blog believe, not everyone thinks they are all terrorists, and not every Muslim takes things too personally. Well you should start saying that instead of labeling all of them with what one person does." I've said that all along but you'd have to know how to read to realize it. I don't label them all by what one person says. I write about terrorists. We've gone through this, Ahmed, so why do you have to keep harping on it and say 'You're against all Muslims, you label all Muslims the same'? Stay with the tour, okay?
Don, Nick, Manda, thanks for the comments and thanks for being able to read.

Whoooeee, you two are always entertaining when you go at it. I'm going to set up a virtual popcorn stand...

For what it's worth: I think you're a very good writer, Ranter. We disagree a lot but you're always polite when we do. Then again, I'm always polite too...
8. April 14th 2007 @ 10:26. youranter Says:
You are polite D. Maybe you should direct Ahmed to your manners series. H ewants me to be nice to him and then, when the olive branch is extended, stabs me in the back and starts calling me names. Readers like him I don't need. Or want for that matter.
9. April 14th 2007 @ 21:54. S.L. Bradish Says:
I really have to question Ahmeds motives, Youranter. He protests way too much and fights back against imagined insults. Maybe he feels guilty for not speaking out against the terrorists (and well he should) or maybe he supports them for some twisted reason of his own. In either case, his foolishness does get boring, doesn't it?
10. April 14th 2007 @ 23:01. youranter Says:
Hi S L. If he ever gets tired of wanking behind his computer screen and takes a look at the real world, you know, the one that doesn't revolve around him and the imagined offenses against him, maybe he'll have something intelligent to say.

moi don't like the way debate going on here..very different from the way it used to be just some weeks back..did something change..?
12. April 19th 2007 @ 12:58. youranter Says:
Hi Bhumika. I guess you did miss something. Ahmed asked me to engage with him in civiled debate. I agreed. Now he's already called me an idiot and attacked me once again because he can't read. I'm not the only one who has to explain things over and over again to him. As far as I'm concerned, the gloves are off. He seems to enjoy showing himself off as a twit, and I am more than happy to help him do it.
