JOHN HOWARD
John Howard, PM of Australia, made news the other day when he criticized Barak Obama for saying the US should pull out of Iraq by March 31, 2008. S L Bradish wrote a post about this and most of her readers agreed with her that Howard was right on the money. In essence, what he said was that the terrorists would love to see the Democrats voted in so they could mark that date on their calendar and sit and wait until the Yanks were gone. Then they could crawl out from under their rocks and start the whole nasty business anew.
Bradish did have a dissenter to her views who said Howard should mind his own business and stay out of American politics. When Bradish replied and hauled him up short on his comments, he typically took a coward's way out and started calling her names. Hardly the way to have an intelligent debate.
The Australians see Howard as a liberal, whom they equate with the American Republicans. I have to wonder if their liberals are so right-winged, what are their conservatives like? Descendants from Attila the Hun? Maybe, just as their seasons are in reverse to ours, so are their politics. It is the only thing I can think of.
Regardless, Howard seems to have some history with immigrants, especially illegal ones, and I think we could all learn a lot from him. A friend recently e-mailed me a statement made by one of Howard's cabinet ministers that spelled out just what Australia was about and if the immigrants didn't like it, they should move on. It was harsher than the Code of Standards adopted by Herouxville, Que., but it seems some people have their priorities clear and we are finally getting away, or trying to at least, from the PC world we now live in.
If Bush does indeed pull the troops from Iraq by March 2008, he will face the same shame that beset Jimmy Carter when his peace talks failed to obtain the release of the hostages in Iran. The difference here is that the Muslims couldn't get the hostages out fast enough when they realized that Reagan was coming to power. You can bet your buns that if the hostages weren't released tout suite under Reagan's watch, the Americans would still be in Iran reconstructing it. Even the caves they live in would have needed major renovations.
With Bush, it is the opposite. By criticizing him, Howard has helped Obama's poll standings as witnessed by his statement that he was flattered one of Bush's close allies had chosen to single him out for attack. Perhaps Howard knows that at least Obama is a better choice for president than Hillary. Obama is so wishy-washy that, if elected, the American people will run to the polls to re-elect a Republican president in four years. Obama would do well to study his allies in the fight against terrorism. He claims, ""I would also note that we have close to 140,000 troops on the ground now and my understanding is Mr. Howard has deployed 1,400, so if he is ginned up to fight the good fight in Iraq, I would suggest that he calls up another 20,000 Australians and sends them to Iraq. Otherwise, it's just a bunch of empty rhetoric." He seems to forget that while the USA has a population of some 300 million people, Australia has only 20 million to chose from. And those troops are respected worldwide as hard driving, sometimes savage, fierce combatants. John Howard said nothing that any open minded follower of the news has not said before. Because of his position on the world stage, he is vilified for speaking the truth by both Democrats and Republicans. I fail to see why. Not meaning to insult my American readers, the Yanks are into themselves enough to forget what Howard said almost 19 months before the elections. All he has actually done is kept Obama in the spotlight. It will be interesting to hear what he says about Hillary should she make such an asinine statement also.
