Ann Coulter is a political pundit with a knowledge of how to shock. She recently told a conservative gathering that she couldn't discuss Democratic politician John Edwards because "you have to go into rehab if you use the word faggot." Edwards is not homosexual but that is hardly the point. It is unacceptable to attack people with whom we disagree by calling them names. It is ugly, rude and puts ammo into the hands of the usual moaning and groaning special interest groups who are now, as always, trying to tarnish all conservatives as bigots and thugs. It seems that if you are on the left or your victim is not currently fashionable, hurl insults at will.
In 1984 when former Presidential candidate Jesse Jackson referred to Jews as "Hymies" and to New York City as "Hymietown", he was allowed to make the most flimsy of apologies and pretend nothing had happened.
In 2005 comedian Dennis Leary refused to apologize at all after he'd hosted a Comedy Central television special called Merry Fuckin' Christmas. "Listen, Christmas is built on a line of bullshit," he said on the show. "Do I believe there was a baby Jesus? You bet your ass I do. But I believe that nine months before he was born someone sure as shit banged the hell out of his mom."
No apology either from the writers of South Park when one of their characters said pedophilia is part of Vatican teaching, or for the episode in which a statue of the Virgin Mary is shown with blood pouring from her rectum.
Magician Penn Jillette referred to "Mother Fucking Teresa" on an HBO special, seen by far more people than were present at Coulter's fatuous speech. No apology.
Tony Kushner stated in The Nation that Pope John Paul II was a "homicidal liar" who "endorses murder." No apology.
On PBS's Newshour With Jim Lehrer it was argued that mandatory DNA testing might be necessary for those most likely to indulge in criminal behaviour: The list was composed of "teenagers, homeless people, Catholic priests." No apology.
Bill Maher said on his talk show that it would have been a good thing if the suicide bomb assassination attempt on Vice-President Dick Cheney in Afghanistan had been successful. No apology.
Conservative politicians compared to Hitler, conservatives described as Nazis, moderate right- wing leaders burned in effigy, pro-life student groups banned from university campuses, conservative voices silenced in universities and anybody who questions establishment wisdom concerning global warming is dismissed as being akin to a Holocaust denier.
The Conservatives/Republicans put up with all this nonsense, have to apologize for any minor transgression they might have done, and the liberal left is allowed to walk away scot free. We certainly don't need the likes of Ann Coulter to give them more fuel for their fire.

Nope, not as bad, we don't just throw people in ovens, we throw them in while they are alive. We also endorse Hitlers test where if your nose is a certain size it means you're a Jew (yeah he was a nutcase).
