IDIOCY
Just when the Green Party almost had me convinced they were more than a one issue party, they work overtime to dispel that notion. Elizabeth May, leader of the party, goes into the backroom with Stephane Dion, leader of the federal Liberals, and cuts a deal for each of them to keep a riding free for the other to try to gain a seat in Parliament in the upcoming federal election. The Green Party is composed of tree huggers of the highest caliber and truly believe in Kyoto. Dion used to be the environment minister in the last government, and did nothing to implement the Kyoto Accord during the 13 years they had a chance. Dion is running as the "Man With The Solutions To Glo-bull Warming' and thinks this move will give him some credence.
But May has bigger problems on her plate than cosying up to Dion. Way out west in Vancouver, La-La Land, she is fielding a candidate who seems more than a few fries short of a Happy Meal. Kevin Potvin is a 9/11 denier who subscribes to the conspiracy theories so beloved by liberals.
As he watched the first plane crash into the World Trade Center, he admits that his spirits soared. When the second tower was hit, he says a little voice inside him said, "Beautiful". "I felt an urge to pump my fist in the air," he says when he received news of the Pentagon being hit. Potvin put all these thoughts on paper when he wrote of his feelings in a rag he publishes called the ‘Republic of East Vancouver'.
On the 2005 London subway bombings, he says, these "were not cowardly, despicable and unspeakable acts; they were acts of war. Islamic terrorists are defending themselves against cultural genocide … Can you blame them?" Well, yes I can. And so can anyone with a few grey cells. Those who support what Islam is doing substitute the word terrorism for murder, hoping it is a bit more palatable for those fighting against them. For all those who think this is an attack against all Muslims or Islam, or want to take it personally, let me say, once again, that I am talking about terrorists/murderers here, not the majority of the Muslim or Islamic community. I don't know why I have to keep re-inventing the wheel for some thick-headed readers, but it seems I must. Maybe I'll just write up a disclaimer so that eventually, after they learn how to read, it will sink in for them.
Back to the point. May is on record as saying she was sickened by what happened on 9/11. She called the acts "despicable". "I was just shattered by 9/11. I could barely function for two weeks," she said. "The idea that somebody felt celebratory about it makes my stomach turn, so I will talk to him, I'll find out what his views are." But she plans to give her candidate the "benefit of the doubt," and an opportunity to clarify his position. Potvin had that chance yesterday as he held a news conference in a local coffee shop. It just got more ridiculous from there.
Surrounded by several Green Party supporters, Potvin said he was ready to discuss "9/11 truth and its implications for Canadian foreign policy." Photocopied handbills screaming ‘The War On Terror Is A Hoax. This the First Awakening. Follow your Curiosity, like Alice in the rabbit hole….Keep stepping forward. Share your discoveries. You will make new friends." were handed out. Potvin was indeed among friends. A conspiracy theorist himself, he has used his newspaper to question "the official version of events of 9/11," suggesting there was "participation" of the U.S. government and "covert agencies." Does it get any nuttier than this? Apparently. One of Potvin's supporters yelled at reporters, "Why does your newspaper avoid the truth? Bush was behind the attacks!" I don't think the sky is the same colour in this woman's world as it is here.
Potvin says, "This is not a war against terrorism. It is a war against unbridled corporatism and militarism." May, to her credit, has received an apology from Potvin concerning his remarks, and while looking for a deeper, more meaningful one, still gives him the ‘benefit of the doubt'. Potvin was acclaimed as May's candidate in Vancouver-Kingsway, and given an opportunity yesterday to revoke that acclamation, Green Party leader passed.
Potvin's apology so far has been more mealy-mouthed than anything that has come out of Hollywood recently, and he should be fired forthwith. There is no ‘benefit of the doubt' here. He admits that he wrote what he felt on 9/11. So why did it take him until Nov. 28, 2002 to publish the column in his left-wing community newspaper?
When the federal election is called, think real hard about what party you're going to vote for Canada.
