HOMEWARD BOUND?
Maybe the pendelum is finally starting to swing back. Today, a story comes to us, courtesy of the National Post, about a chap we will refer to as Laibar Singh, seeing as how that is his name.
Now, Laibar found his way to our more than accommodating shores in November of 2003 under a fake passport. He quickly applied for refugee status as he is not a stupid man and figured we would more than welcome him as some cast-off wretch. Visions of welfare, free medical and legal advice plus all the other myriad benefits we bestow upon true refugees must have been dancing in his head. However, Laibar stumbled just a bit in his attempt to defraud the Canadian government.
"He told Canadian officials that Indian police would torture him if he returned to his homeland. They investigated his claim and found it to be baseless. His refugee application was denied." Whoops. "A judicial review of his case also found Mr. Singh's refugee claim to be spurious and he lost his subsequent bid to win an exemption on humanitarian grounds in 2004." Gee, would that be, like what , strike two?
Laibar has been dodging deportation ever since. But last year, he suffered an aneurysm that left him hospitalized for five months and in a rehabilitation centre for another six months. The cost for this little mishap is estimated to be around $500,000. Now, you can't fault the guy for being paralysed as the result of this. But, on July 8, he was ordered out of the country at an additional cost of some $70,000 due to his condition.
Did I mention Mr. Singh is not stupid? Not by a long shot. Before being carted away, he asked the authorities if they would drop him off at the Sahib Kalgidhar Darbar Gurdwara temple in Abbotsford, B.C. to pray before they shoved his sorry butt on a plane home. Once there, he claimed sanctuary and refused to be removed. His condition deteriorated and he was returned to hosptal where, on Aug. 9, local police and Canada border crossing officials took him into custody.
Of course the liberal mind set has rallied to the man's defence and Liberal MP Ujjal Dosanjh suggests he should now be given an exemption on humanitarian grounds. He has, at this point, been given a 60 day reprieve.
"Singh has been given the full benefit of our refugee determination process, our judicial process and our political process, and failed every test of credibility. The government had already showed too much goodwill when our officials naively assumed Mr. Singh, having lost his refugee application, would leave the country. He did not. When he fell ill, Canadians, through their medical system, spent an enormous sum to try and return him to health before returning him to his homeland. And when he asked to be allowed to pray at a temple prior to leaving Canada, he was again the beneficiary of Canadian goodwill -- which he once again abused." He is making a mockery of our refugee system and the generosity of Canadians in general.
He should be put back on a plane forthwith with bill stapled to his forehead showing the money we've already spent on him. India will not reimburse us any of the costs, but maybe they will get a clue.
As for us, we should all wake up and never again allow things to go too far. Sanctuary was fine in its day and time, when you couldn't rely on judges to give you a fair trial, but those days are long gone. Today it's just a word to people like Singh to abuse the system which he has cheated repeatedly in the past. It's time we took control of our borders again.

there's always one jerk off in every cpountry who gets away with fooling a vast majority of people and ripping them off for a goodly portion of their money without ever being caught...
Glad this one was caught and arrested! And maybe a bill sent to his country upon his return would be appropriate eh?
Take care buddy,
Nick
