COWARD
The CBC recently did a report on a US army deserter and wanted feedback from the audience on it's take of how the report was done. I was going to do an in-depth article about this, but I think my position is clear on this. Deserters are cowards.
I went into the CBC web site and cut 92 responses out, but I won't bore you with them here. Suffice it to say that there were 38 votes to keep the guy in Canada, 25 to toss him out and 29 that rambled without addressing the question of whether he should go or stay.
The subject of the interview was Joshua Key who fled the US to come here while on a 2 week leave from Iraq. Key played the sympathy card well, stating that he knew of no job where, if you didn't do it, you could be executed. This played on a lot of minds as the people who voted to keep this guy thought he might actually face a firing squad if he was returned to the US to face the music. I believe the last soldier shot for desertion was Pvt. Eddie Slovak in WW II. The worst Key would face would be some jail time. In truth, I don't think the army wants jerks like this and would give him a dishonourable discharge to get rid of him.
Many of those who wrote in asked why he doesn't return to the US where his protest might actually do some good. When you think about it, it makes sense. Hiding here in Canada does nothing to spread his message. But I suspect the coward is more afraid of jail time than making a point.
But the whole thing got me thinking and I feel I've come up with a suitable punishment for the guy. No jail time involved. (That'll keep him happy) All he has to do is go to the parents of any soldier, sailor, airman or marine who has died in this conflict and tell them their child is dead thanks to cowards like him who chose to desert rather than carry out the duty they signed up for.
Fair enough?

That's it D., there is no draft anymore. Why would a conscientious objector sign up in the first place. Key says he deserted because the war is immoral, illegal and unjust. I wish I could tell my boss what work I wanted to do instead of what he wanted me to do. I really like the guys who suddenly find Jesus before they're shipped out and then become objectors. They take the money and the education and then figure they can quit and no one gets hurt. They really make me sick.
