Opinionated Ranter - The Adventures of Being Awesome...

HELP ME RHONDA

Okay, I need some help here. Will someone please explain art to me?

We have a piece of plywood painted white with a red stripe running down the middle of it hanging in Ottawa today. We, the taxpayers, got to spend 1.3 million dollars to obtain it. This is art?

Recently, here in town, we had an 'artist' sprinkle our riverfront parks with cornflakes so we could watch the seagulls eat them up. He didn't even do this himself. People volunteered to help him. This is art?

We have people who make dresses out of rotten meat and exhibit this as art. How so? Same with outfits made of condoms or a pot of urine on display as 'art'.

We are now in the throes of having human bodies on display for those among us who are more ghoulish than others. These are apparently real human bodies with various sections of their anatomy removed and parts of other bodies glued in their place. You are treated to the view of brains, hearts, ribs and lungs and eyes and this is art?

I have no idea where these bodies came from, but the show is touted as being composed of 'real human bodies'. Why anyone would spend money to see this exhibition is beyond me. And what about the indignity done to the deceased? Isn't that a crime in itself? Seems to me you can go to jail for pissing on someone's grave. At least that person got buried. It makes you think twice about leaving your body to science if that's what they're going to do to it. It's not only 'art', it's a 'learning experience'. Personally, I think it's sickening.

Whatever happened to the Norman Rockwell's and others of his ilk who produced what is recognizable as true art? You know, paintings of land, sea and sky scapes. Pictures of roads, bridges and tunnels. Cars, planes and trains. Fruit, flowers and portraits of people.

Art galleries are always busy asking for money because no one goes to them. I wonder why? When they condone crap like this you'd think they'd know people would stay away in droves. Why do my tax dollars go to help them out? I resent this strongly.

Someone please help me understand art. I seem to have lost the knack for knowing what it is and what it isn't. As Red Green said, "If I can do it, it ain't art."

COME TOGETHER

A long, long time ago, in a land far, far away, there came strife and disruption and chaos. White men would bring black men to the shores of this distant land and sell them like so much chattel. Other countries had already outlawed this practice, but the people living in this place needed a bit more time to come around to a civilized way of thinking. In fact the argument grew so large that it caused a war to be fought between those who insisted black men were property and those who said no, they were indeed human beings entitled to all the rights and privileges granted the white man.

The war was fought and won by those those who wanted to free the black man, causing such distress that the leader of the country was gunned down one night. But the fight didn't end there. It would take yet another hundred years before the black man was allowed to attend the same schools the white children did, drink from the same water fountain the white man did, sit wherever he wanted to on a public bus instead of being told to sit in the back of it. After all this grief and strife the fight is not yet over, but giant strides are being made daily and the two races are learning to live side by side in harmony.

After the fight between the anti-blacks and pro-blacks was over the Irish started showing up on the shores of this land. Desperate to escape their disease ridden land, they often showed up hungry and penniless but with a fierce determination to find honest work so they could sustain themselves. They were shunned at first and no one wanted to hire them. Known for their drinking prowess and their willingness to duke it out with any and all who crossed their paths, they finally started to find employment as policemen. Who better to arrest someone than a man who wasn't afraid to use his fist if needs be? Finally, the citizens of this country decided that potato famine was not a contagious disease and began to welcome the Irish into their fold. Again, this is an ongoing story, but in the meantime, the Irish and the rest of the population are beginning to live in harmony.

Next came the Jews. No one wanted them. Hitler offered them up to just about every country in the world to get them out of his hair, and while many sympathized with their plight, no one would accept them. They were shunned, spat upon, slurred and made the target of what we now call hate crimes. Jim Stillman has writtena brilliant piece on the plight oof the Jews in this country and it is not difficult to imagine that if it is happening here, it must be worse in less tolerant societies. Still, the Jews persevered and became a force to be reckoned with. Still an ongoing saga, but in the meantime, we have learned to co-exist and tolerate each other. Religion should never stand in the way of friendship and slowly but surely we are learning this.

What does all this have to do with anything? I'm glad you asked. The black slaves, or rather, former slaves, signed up to help this country in its time of need. Whether that was WW II or relief efforts in hurricane whipped India, they were there. Willingly. The Irish and the Jews did, and still do, the exact same thing. Whether you are a fan of a 'melting pot' or 'multiculturalist' society really doesn't matter. It just goes to show what can be achieved when we all get together and start pulling in the same direction. Which brings us to Islam and the radical Muslims it breeds.

Writers other than myself have opined on this site that Muslims do nothing to dispell the notion that they are of a peaceful religion and want to rid themselves of the image of terrorism and suicide murderers. Look at any disaster that occurs around the world and what do you find? Jews, Christians, Buddhists, and every other religion you can name coming together to help those in need. And where are the Muslims? Over here, being offended at Christmas trees, not having separate prayer rooms, not being granted foot baths, etc. Is this how we assimilate? I think not.

I don't believe all Muslims are terrorists or suicide murderers. Most of them, I hope and pray, are gentle, law-abiding folks who just wish to be left to their own devices and allowed to worship in their own way. Fine by me. But they are conspicuously absent in their failure to help others less fortunate than themselves. Canada recently spent millions of dollars to retrieve a bunch of dual citizenship Lebanese from war torn Lebanon, only to see these same fools head back to that country when the fighting died down. How stupid is that? They should have been left to fend for themselves. Lebanon is a mainly Muslim country and these people came to Canada to escape the dictatorship they suffered over there. And they go back for more? Idiocy!

Other writers on this site will defend to the death their right to practice their faith and try to get you to believe their way is the right way. Everyone of every faith thinks their way is the right way. That doesn't make it right. Trying to shove it down your neighbour's throat makes it wrong. I may be Catholic, Lutheran or Anglican. You may be Jewish, Buddhist or Shinto. Why should we try to convert one another? Can't we just get along, help our fellow man when required and leave religion out of it? Apparently not. Some readers here take things all too seriously (themselves) and revert to name calling and foul language, as if that will make their point for them.

It's silly and childish, but considering the sources, you can't expect much better from these juveniles. As I've said above, the battles against prejudice and bigotry are far from over. But we can all at least try to come to some sort of agreement that we can do better and try to understand one another. And the Muslims can start by showing some faith in the system that affords them freedoms and roghts they never had in whatever country they escaped from.

HATING BUSH

I watched the McLaughlin Report on PBS the other day and it got me wondering just how much Americans hate George W.

We've all seen the reports about the bridge that collapsed in Wisconsin and I'm sure we can come to an agreement that it was a case of shoddy maintenance. So how is George responsible for that?

The way I understand it, the feds are responsible for setting standards on how highways, bi-ways, bridges and tunnels are built and it is up to the state to ensure that they are built to those standards. It is also up to the state to maitain those highways, bi-ways, bridges and tunnels.

Yet here was a liberal columnist saying it was all his fault. I suppose the only way she'd scream louder is if Bush actually did get into the micro-management of society that she is demanding and then tell him to butt the hell out. I couldn't believe her attitude.

She's a regular on the panel and even her liberal buddy was looking at her like she'd just dropped all her marbles. The cons were making a point they really didn't have to make, just to keep her happy I suppose, but trust me, there was plenty of eye rolling going on.

Bush is not popular right now, but does he deserve this? I don't think so. I know what our federal government is supposed to look after, what the provincial government is responsible for and what the municipalities are supposed to look after. I don't believe it is too much different in the states. And this woman is supposed to be a respected journalist/columnist. I'm just a blogger and I can figure out simple things like this.

If she was in my employ, I'd be having serious, second thoughts about how much longer I'd be paying her.

CARS

Summer is over. I know, usually we look at Labour Day to signal the end of summer, but we returned from the local Corn Fest today and it's like a countdown for the blast off at Cape Canaviral. You know the grim reaper is waiting around the corner and there's nothing you can do to avoid him.

So I started thinking about the Woodward Ave. Dream Cruise in hopes of hanging on to summer for just a little while longer. The Cruise is 13 years old this year and just keeps getting bigger and better each year. It commemorates the old days of the '50's and '60's when you'd cruise Woodward and race stoplight to stoplight for pink slips. From the foot of Woodward in downtown Detroit to Pontiac, the street is filled, both sides, with cars from an era we'll never see again

STRANGE

Today, as Paul Harvey would say, we have a strange. It seems Terry DaCosta, a Woodstock, Ont. man has spent the last 24 days cooling his heels in a Monroe County, Michigan jail for something he has never been charged with.

DaCosta decided one day, Aug. 3, to boat out to Put-In-Bay, near Sandusky, Ohio for a bit of dinner and some partying. It's not the first time he's done this. In fact, he did it just two weeks prior to this episode. So, he ties off the boat and heads for a phone to call the American Border Patrol to gain permission to enter the country. While he waits, he has a couple of beers. When the Border Patrol finally does show up, they have a bit of bad news. He has been denied entry. He is then told to leave

HOMEWARD BOUND?

Maybe the pendelum is finally starting to swing back. Today, a story comes to us, courtesy of the National Post, about a chap we will refer to as Laibar Singh, seeing as how that is his name.

Now, Laibar found his way to our more than accommodating shores in November of 2003 under a fake passport. He quickly applied for refugee status as he is not a stupid man and figured we would more than welcome him as some cast-off wretch. Visions of welfare, free medical and legal advice plus all the other myriad benefits we bestow upon true refugees must have been dancing in his head. However, Laibar stumbled just a bit in his attempt to defraud the Canadian government

BOATING

Many years ago, in a former life, I owned a boat. No biggie, just a nice 14' fishing boat. It served me well and I always had a good time when I was out on the water in her. And as a true fisherman, I would pack a lunch and a six-pack before going out to kill some fishies. I wasn't sure, but I thought it was an unwritten rule somewhere that this is what you had to do. Fishing is a peaceful pass time but it can get mentally exhausting and it can get damn hot when you're out there all day and the little suckers just ain't biting.

Well, I woke up today to find that the law is going to be stepped up against drunk boaters. On the surface of it, I have to agree with the reasoning behind it. There have been too many fatalities around here in the past involving boaters who were under the influence

ON THE OTHER HAND .................

I've written in the past how the Indians are holding our feet to the fire by claiming the white man has violated just about any and all treaties their great-great-great grandfathers thought was a pretty good deal at the time. Now, I have to put the moccasin on the other foot.

Brandon Nolan is a native Canadian, an Aboriginal, a First Nations person who got the shaft big time this week when Canadian border crossing guards treated him worse than they'd treat a convicted felon

WHAT A TWIT

I've said it often enough here, I'm not the coldest beer in the fridge, and last night it dawned on me just how warm I really am. I have been keeping track of SL Bradish's writings on 'Billary' and never really knew what it was about them that bothered me. I guess I had an epiphany.

The good (?) senator of New York is, as we all know, trying to land her ass back in the White House. (Maybe there's still furniture there she didn't think of hauling off the first time) Now, Bradish has made a strong point about what 'Billary' promises, what she delivers and how much she can waffle. All well documented and all well defended by Bradish. (Read the posts if you don't believe me. 'The Political Brief, right here on Orble, folks.) Anyway, it finally struck me, just what the hell Bradish was saying

THINK ABOUT IT

Okay, so here's the deal. You find yourself in charge of a rather large country and don't really know how to go about taking care of business.

This country has been around for a while and has built a pretty good reputation based on civilization, innovation, inventions and some pretty solid science. However, by the time you arrive on the scene, things have changed somewhat

SOME COMMON SENSE?

Our judicial system is broken. I've written about this in the past and it is gratiying to finally see someone agree with me. Lorrie Goldstein of the Toronto Sun has writen a piece explaining just where we fail society in granting criminals rehab and parole rather than actually sentencing to the length of time they deserve to spend behind bars according to what they have done.

I have written that I feel the Americans have a better system than us when it comes to picking judges. They elect their judges and that makes them accountable to the general population when they screw up. Let a mass murderer off with a slap on the wrist and next election you'll be picking up an unemployment cheque instead of a hefty salary. Over here, judges are appointed and thus not accountable to anyone for their decisions. This is why you see some perps getting bail and being released back on the streets before the ink is dry on the arresting officers report form

HEZBOLLAH

Well what comes to your mind when you read 'Hezbollah'? Pictures of Arabs trying to eliminate Jews? Drive them into the sea? Take it up from where Hitler left off? This is a difficult piece to write. I am not a supporter of Jews, but that doesn't make me an anti-Semite either. So just let me rant for a bit.

I truly believe that everyone has a right to live, believe in whatever God they wish and they should be left alone to follow their own course. I may not agree with them, but it is not my business and I have no right to force my own beliefs down someone else's throat. As much as I dislike Jehovah Witnesses, I do have to give them credit for not forcing their opinions on anyone else

CHUCKLE

I had to laugh at this when I read it. Ontario Transportation Minister Donna Cansfield has proposed green licence plates for sex offenders. Let me say first off, this seems like a good idea. Okay, not for the environmentalists, but if they're not too busy hugging trees even they can see the benefits to this plan.

Right now, sex offenders are required to check in with the police so they can be tracked. I suppose that keeping them under lock and key in the first place is too much of a burden for our judicial system and the cops have nothing better to do than spend ttheir time chasing these perverts around, but that is the matter for a whole different article

COMING CLEAN

I don't blog on here just to see my name up 'in lights', although I'm sure many people think so. I have been carefully studying the results of my previous rants and feel it is only fair at this time to come clean with my audience, such as it is.

I am a snail whisperer

INTERESTING

An interesting story showed up in the paper today. It's about a place called 'Your Black Muslim Bakery'. This joint is located on San Pablo Ave. in Oakland, California. What makes the story interesting is what's been happening here in the last little while.

Before we go too far, let's be aware that the bakery owes more than $200,000 in back taxes and filed for bankruptcy protection last October

I'M NOT SURE .................

I recently forwarded a message I received from a friend and titled it "Yesterday". It's a look back to the days when our generation, the baby boomers, grew up and some of the horrific dangers we had to face just to make it from birthday to birthday. But it bugged me because I didn't know where or when things went from using common sense to being so politically correct that no one has to take responsibility for any of their actions.

It was probably before this, but do you remember the commercial that told us to buy 'the best' because we were 'worth it'? I think it was a shampoo commercial. The people who grew up swallowing the 'I'm worth it' line were dubbed the me generation and ever since we've had to hang a moniker on succeeding generations to know where they fit into the food chain

HOW CRAPPY

I just finished reading an article that I thought was funny. There's fellow living in Loxahatchee, Florida who is being charged with running an illegal composting site. Now, we're all familiar with composting, so what exactly made the authorities charge this guy?

Well, it seems he has 20,000 cubic yards of horse manure on his property. In some spots, this stuff is piled 15 feet high. I suppose he could use the Paul McCartney marijuana defence and say it was for personal use (not to smoke but to help his rose bushes bloom) but that might be a bit iffy

HOORAY

Sometimes, if you wait long enough, common sense prevails. I read in the paper this morning that Congress has passed legislation "that will protect from lawsuits any airline passengers who inform authorities and complain to staff about people boarding or sitting on an aircraft who appear suspicious and a possible terrorist threat."

You remember that this all started last year when six Muslims boarded an airplane and worried passengers when they "loudly denounced the Iraq war among themselves, insisted on conducting ostentatious Islamic prayers". I would've been worried too

KID NATION

Anyone who reads my articles must, by this time, know that I am not a fan of 'reality shows'. I think they're beyond stupid, and as much as it seems the majority of the population agrees with me, Hollywood keeps coming out with this crap.

I'll watch Hell's Kitchen, but that's it. Gordon Ramsey does a fine job at swearing at his aspiring chefs, pushing them each week to their breaking points, and I think with good reason. It is his name he is putting on the line after someone finally wins, and if he loses his good reputation, what does he have left
